Robert Askew, Jr. MD FACS

Robert E. Askew, Jr. was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up in Austin, Texas. Dr. Askew graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982, and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with honors in 1986. He was elected to the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. After completing his residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, he joined his father in surgical practice in Austin in 1991.

Dr. Askew is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Texas Surgical Society, the Austin Surgical Society, the Texas Medical Association and the Travis County Medical Society.

Dr. Askew is a member of the American Society of Breast Cancer and works closely with local medical and radiation oncologists, radiologist and plastic surgeons to provide state of the art surgical care in breast cancer including ultrasound guided breast biopsies, breast conservation surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and brachytherapy.

Dr. Askew has extensive experience in thyroid and parathyroid surgery including the minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy .

Dr. Askew is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon performing laparoscopic surgery for diseases of the gallbladder, colon, small intestine, spleen, adrenal gland, liver and stomach. He also performs laparoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux and diaphragmatic hernias.

In addition, Dr. Askew repairs a variety of abdominal wall hernias using both open and laparoscopic techniques including incisional, inguinal, epigastric, umbilical and hiatal hernias.

Dr. Askew has served with The American Cancer Society Board of Austin, the medical executive board of Seton Hospital and was recently the Chief of Surgery at Seton Hospital Main. Currently, Dr. Askew and his colleagues are also involved with the surgical education of Austin’s own Surgical Residency program.

Listed in Who’s Who of American Surgeons, US News and World Report “Best” Surgeons. He is named a “Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly Magazine. Dr. Askew enjoys carrying on his family tradition of compassionate surgical care.
